Wynnewood Park Methodist Church met for the first time on March 10, 1956 in the office building of the old Sol Kaplan Dairy. About 30 people were present. The buildings were just off Avent Ferry Road on the edge of Wynnewood Park development. They are now covered with houses and apartments. A retired pastor, Ernest C. Durham, was assigned to lead the congregation until Annual Conference met in June. At that time, Jack Crum was appointed as the first regular pastor.
The dairy barn continued to serve as the church building until Mr. & Mrs. W. L. Martin, members of the local congregation, gave two acres of their home farm to the church. The Raleigh Board of Missions purchased three more acres from them to establish the present location on the corner of Avent Ferry and Crest Roads as a permanent site. The main education building was completed and the congregation held their first service in the new building on August 27, 1961.
